The Perfect Nest, by by Catherine Friend

Jack the cat is comes up with a plan to get himself a egg for an omelet. He builds the best nest ever in hopes of attracting a bird to lay an egg for him. Instead he gets three different breeds of fowl that put up a fight for the nest then abandoned their eggs with the promise of a better nest the next farm over....Sounds awful when you break it down like that but the ending to this book was so surprisingly touching I just fell in love with the story! I love it when I am surpised- Oh and it is fun to read cause you get to do cool accents for all the characters. My inner actress enjoys it
